For Coaches
Completing your certification
Do I need a teaching certificate to be a coach?
This varies by state and district. Most states allow both teachers and non-teachers to coach, provided they complete required coaching certifications and pass background checks. Check your specific state requirements or ask your athletic director.
Can volunteer coaches use CTC?
Yes. Volunteer coaches typically have the same certification requirements as paid coaches when it comes to safety training. CTC provides the same comprehensive training for both paid and volunteer coaching positions.
How long do I have access to the course materials?
Coaches have lifetime access to course materials through their CTC account. You can review content at any time, even after completing your initial certification.
What if I coach multiple sports?
One CTC certification typically covers all sports you coach at your school. You don't need separate certifications for each sport unless your state requires sport-specific training for certain activities.
Can I complete training before I'm hired as a coach?
Check with your athletic director first. Many districts provide CTC access only to hired coaches. However, being proactively certified can make you a more attractive coaching candidate.
Who pays for my certification?
This varies by district. Many school districts cover the full cost of CTC certification for their coaches. Some districts reimburse coaches after completion. Ask your athletic director about your district's policy.

It provides coaches with a single platform to complete all athletic coaching certification requirements including First Aid, CPR, Sudden Cardiac/Lindsay's Law, Coaching Fundamentals, PBIS training, and Mental Health Training.
Why do over 500 Ohio school districts use CTC?
The platform offers significant benefits: it saves time and provides one single platform for all coaches' certificates. It eliminates tracking staggered expiration dates and delivers quality professional development annually.
What does CTC certify me for in Ohio?
CTC has been approved to fully certify Ohio coaches when completed annually, provided the coach maintains a valid Pupil Activity Permit (PAP).
How long does CTC certification take?
The program takes approximately two hours for most coaches, with the ability to pause and resume as needed.
How long does certification last in Ohio?
Certification remains valid from the time of completion until June 30th of the school year for which it was completed. The platform resets April 1st annually.
What does CTC NOT complete me for?
Coaches must maintain a valid Pupil Activity Permit and current fingerprinting and background checks with their district. CTC provides the training required for your PAP, but does not replace the PAP itself.
Do I still need to apply/renew my Pupil Activity Permit (PAP)?
Yes. A current CTC certification fulfills the required training needed to renew or apply for an initial PAP. You must still submit your PAP application to the State Board of Education.
Do I still need fingerprinting and background checks?
Yes, coaches must still obtain fingerprinting and background checks when required for the Pupil Activity Permit. These are processed separately through your school district or the state system.
Do I still need annual Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) certification?
No. CTC meets the SCA requirement (Lindsay's Law), eliminating the need to navigate the ODE LMS system separately. This training is included in your comprehensive CTC certification.
What else does the CTC platform do for Ohio coaches?
The platform provides emergency response information by school and OHSAA sport-specific handbook and bylaw reference information. This gives coaches quick access to critical protocols and rules.
What are the additional requirements for paid coaches in Ohio?
Paid coaches are school employees and must complete additional training including: Auditor of State Fraud Training, PBIS Training, HB 47 Training, HB 8 Training, NIL Coach Training, Sarah's Law (Seizure Training), and FERPA Training. CTC includes all of these requirements.
Missouri-Specific FAQs
MSHSAA and role-based requirements
What are Missouri's coaching requirements?
Missouri coaching requirements are set by the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA). All coaches must complete safety certifications including CPR/AED/First Aid, concussion training, heat illness prevention, and other role-specific requirements.
What's the difference between requirements for head coaches, assistant coaches, and volunteers?
MSHSAA requires different training levels based on coaching role. Head coaches need all safety certifications plus professional development and sport-specific requirements. Assistant coaches need core safety certifications and alignment with head coach protocols. Volunteer coaches need basic safety training and supervision responsibilities training.
Why does it matter which role I'm assigned?
Requirements differ for head coaches, assistants, and volunteers to ensure appropriate training for each role. Athletic directors must maintain clear documentation of coaching roles to ensure coaches receive the correct certification level and avoid compliance issues.
Does CTC customize training based on my coaching role in Missouri?
Yes. CTC maps required modules to each role (head coach, assistant, volunteer), ensuring no coach accidentally receives the wrong training or certification level. The platform automatically assigns the appropriate training based on your designated role.
What safety certifications are required for all Missouri coaches?
All coaches regardless of level must complete: Concussion Education, CPR/AED/First Aid, Heat Illness Prevention, Cardiac Arrest Awareness, Student Mental Health training, and Emergency Action Planning. These core safety certifications apply to head coaches, assistants, and volunteers.
Does one CTC certificate cover all MSHSAA requirements?
Yes. One comprehensive CTC course covers all MSHSAA requirements based on your coaching role. You receive one certificate covering everything—no juggling multiple training sources or certificates.
How does CTC help athletic directors manage Missouri compliance?
CTC allows ADs to assign appropriate training levels based on coach role, track all coaches in one centralized dashboard, ensure compliance across every coaching position, avoid errors from coaches using incorrect training, and generate reports for MSHSAA roster submissions.
Does CTC include Missouri-specific content?
Yes. CTC includes Missouri-specific content aligned with MSHSAA bylaws, safety expectations, and role-based requirements to ensure complete compliance statewide.
Georgia-Specific FAQs
GIAA, GHSA, and heat policy requirements
What are the two athletic associations in Georgia?
Georgia has two athletic associations: GIAA (Georgia Independent Athletic Association) for private and independent schools, and GHSA (Georgia High School Association) for public schools. Each has its own coaching requirements and policies.
What are GIAA coaching requirements?
GIAA requires annual safety trainings, valid certifications throughout the season, compliance with school-specific policies, and additional requirements for varsity head coaches. All coaches must complete core safety certifications including concussion training, CPR/First Aid, and heat illness prevention.
What are GHSA coaching requirements?
GHSA requires comprehensive safety training including concussion protocols, emergency response training, CPR/AED/First Aid certification, student athlete health awareness, and strict compliance with Georgia's heat policy. Heat policy compliance is heavily emphasized in GHSA schools.
Why is heat policy so important in Georgia?
Georgia's climate creates significant heat-related risks for student athletes, particularly during fall sports. The state has experienced heat-related fatalities in high school athletics. GHSA's heat policy includes mandatory acclimatization periods, practice restrictions based on wet bulb temperature, hydration requirements, and emergency protocols. All Georgia coaches must demonstrate thorough understanding of heat illness prevention and recognition.
Does CTC cover both GIAA and GHSA requirements?
Yes. CTC provides training aligned with both GIAA and GHSA requirements in a single platform. The system automatically delivers the appropriate content based on your school's association affiliation.
What makes Georgia's heat policy different from other states?
Georgia has one of the most comprehensive heat policies in the country due to the state's climate and athletic culture. The policy mandates specific acclimatization protocols, wet bulb temperature monitoring, scheduled water breaks, and immediate removal of athletes showing heat illness symptoms. Coaches must understand both prevention and emergency response.
Are requirements different for private vs. public schools in Georgia?
Yes. Private/independent schools (GIAA) and public schools (GHSA) have different governing bodies and slightly different emphasis areas. However, core safety certifications—concussion, CPR/First Aid, heat illness—are required by both. GHSA places heavier emphasis on heat policy compliance.
How does CTC address Georgia's heat policy training?
CTC includes comprehensive heat illness prevention training with Georgia-specific protocols, wet bulb temperature guidelines, acclimatization requirements, recognition of heat illness stages, emergency response procedures, and documentation requirements. This training meets both GIAA and GHSA standards.
